- As a gateway to the MENA market, the regional design landscape remains a beacon of stability. In the face of global shifts, what specific factors are giving international brands and investors the confidence to deepen their commitment to the GCC’s design and hospitality sectors?
There is a great deal of global shift in the last few weeks. There must be new narrative to build confidence especially in a local supply chain and global commitment.
- How is the industry evolving so that design goes beyond aesthetics to actively contribute to the social and economic resilience of the region?
The region is highly dependent on the construction industry for its economy, with non‑oil revenue from tourism playing a critical role in sustaining it. Design for growth is complementary in nature and closely tied to the value systems of end users. Approaches to design, whether driven by aesthetics, sustainability, or value, vary significantly across different market segments. b
- Given the current climate, what are developers and procurement leaders prioritizing today when selecting regional partners? Are we seeing a shift toward products and collaborations that emphasize local sustainability and long-term security?
While regional partners are important, there is an economy of production and supply; if this can be matched it works.
What perhaps works is a transparent understanding of what the regional players offer, what part of their own manufacturing process is dependent on external sourcing and if everything can be supplied within the region.
- What responsibility does the design industry hold in shaping spaces that do more than just inspire? How can we use design to build bridges between the many cultures converging in the region and provide genuine support to the communities we serve?
We play an unenviable role in creating bridges. However aping other western cultures in the name of standards is diminishing the value of cultural interpretation. A deeper study and buy in from clients are required.
- The Middle East is defined by a spirit of rapid progress that refuses to be stalled by external shifts. How does the industry continue to drive the regional design vision forward, and what message does this continued growth send to the global community about the future of the MENA market?
This is like holding a crystal ball and looking for answers. It is politically dependent and beyond anybody’s guess. We need to hold steadfast and watch out for the next few months on building confidence.
