Our designer Pelin Ertugrul has incorporated painter Gustav Moreau’s symbolism of the Butterfly Effect in her rug design, such as in “Thracian Girl”, “Death of Sappho” and “Apollo Vanquishing” by Moreau. Symbolism consisted of the belief that art should represent absolute reality that could only be described indirectly and was seen as a revival of some mystical tendencies in the Romantic tradition.
Additionally the symbolism was a reaction in favor of spirituality, the imagination, and dreams; the sketches are abstract, and you can see the actual things such as the burning chandeliers or lotus flowers on fire in the background which subconsciously gives the “beginning of the chaos” effect on the viewer.
The material the rug is pure silk from Brazil; the texture is soft and looks different from both sides; one side being dark, the other being bright.
They only chose hand-knotting for their rugs because of the ability to create high quality rugs with complex designs. A traditional weaving technique going back hundreds of years, The Turkish Double Knots, are considered as the strongest type of knot are used in the design of this rug.
The Swallowtail Rug has been nominated for the America’s Magnificent Carpet Award in 2016, by the Architectural Digest Magazine. It has been well received in the US and after a year of good reviews overseas, it has arrived to the Index show to make its debut in this part of the world. This is a one of a kind piece and was not for sale. After the Index exhibition this product line will be for sale.
