Interior design, like many other creative areas, is greatly impacted by popular culture's ebbs and flows. In the realm of interior design, there is no exception to this norm. Sustainability has emerged as one of the most intriguing and contentious of these issues.

Even though sustainable materials may be difficult to source, particularly in the Middle East, it is critical to promote open discourse and improve access to knowledge on sustainability and sustainable materials. This is critical in supporting eco-friendly design. As a consequence of this endeavor, a global partnership in the interior industry will be developed. As sustainable design improves, one of the most challenging problems for Middle Eastern designers would be to think globally while acting locally.

Renewable energy usage, sustainable ventilation systems to grey water usage and water-saving technologies, water-producing technologies, recyclable material, and many more are being discussed over and over and getting introduced heavily and it is of utmost importance.  While incorporating all these technological enhancements in the design there are other important factors that we give less importance to.

In addition to this, one of the most important aspects is material and energy wastage. In this fast-paced world, the designs also change and evolve. This is quite evident in UAE. Rather than chasing trendy & fashionable design with the fast phase and subsequently changing every 3-5 years’ time is a waste of materials, energy and money. Along with maintaining a factor of sustainability in designs, it is also equally essential to include timeliness in those designs. with a proper study and planning.  As Winston Churchill said “Failing to plan is planning to fail” in many cases rework and rework is quite evident and wastage of materials and human energy is immense.  One main criteria of a sustainable design are proper planning which also includes the re-usage of materials to address the notion of wastage & planning procure locally as much as possible. Import sensibly sustainable materials when it is essential, and if it is long lasting, are fundamentals.

Using creativity to minimize the material wastage and planning the patterns/forms considering sustainability is vital. Knowing the material properties, their size, availability and the treatments for long life span without damaging the mother earth is crucial.

Nonetheless, there are pros and cons attached to these. For instance, when locally procuring materials, there is a slight chance of not getting the right material or not finding the right match for the design or what is needed by the client. This where planning of design thinking process and alignment with client brief and discussion at early stages is recommended.

New constructions in UAE are rapidly growing and old properties getting a feel of tiredness and trying hard to keep up with fast changing phase. It is the interior designer who can identify and creatively implement the changes with minimum impact to achieve timeless design that all appreciate regardless of the era.
