With approximately 69 years’ experience between them, Letitia Taylor, Jo Hamilton and Adrian Shaw discussed this afternoon, some of the key trends they were experiencing in the residential market this year.

Explaining what the word ‘trends’ mean to them, the trio had a difference in opinion to an extent but all had a similar conclusion in that trends are all about the customer or client, their lifestyle and finding products that represent people’s personalities.

Adrian Shaw conducted research through his firm, ID Design, and found that “50% of customers want something different.”

Jo Hamilton supported this view, explaining: “For me, trends are very important to a point – they set the scene but it’s about the person, what do they need from me and what I am supplying. Trends emerge from our lives and from what’s going on in the world, they are not just picked out – it’s a journey that is created that leads to something becoming more popular”.

According to the panel, spaces in properties are being influenced by the people in them, while often servicing three generations. Homes and furniture are seen as reflecting this.

This emphasis on ‘people’ led the discussion onto the subject of well-being throughout the panel discussion. Natural materials including stone, marble and natural woods that bring the nature element into a home, with Jo Hamilton saying they're "making a comeback”.

The panel agreed that nature, something that is not widely accessible in Dubai, can be incorporated in many ways to create an atmosphere as well.

Letitia Taylor, of Harrods Interiors, said: "Creating an atmosphere and creating an immersive design experience as well as plenty of greenery is very important. In London, the market is slowing down due to economic reasons and not moving as much but clients are investing in their home and creating a space to enjoy because of it.

"We want to create an atmosphere and a unique experience for our clients where they have that sense of sanctuary and peace where they can really be themselves."

Lighting was also said to be very important in creating a sense of wellbeing, which was often easily forgotten. Wellness and lighting – bringing the outside in - goes hand-in-hand, said Letitia.

She said: “Lighting is right up there in terms of the design and 80% of success of any scheme. You could have the most beautiful colours and trends, spot on, but if it’s not lit well, you can’t see those colours so light is essential”.

Wanting to feel warm and cosy has influenced this year’s colour pallet and trends being experienced towards the second half of this year.

Letitia Taylor continued: “Sunset colours ranging from warm peach and light pinks to cool blues and pastels which has been seen internationally has excitingly come to the forefront of the trends this year. The continuous trend ‘inside outside’ that look at greens and textures are being showcased right the way through INDEX Design Series this year with the theme ‘Design for the Senses’ and is also demonstrated through our Harrods Interiors VIP Lounge”.

Design for the senses, INDEX Design Series theme this year can be experienced through all the halls and features from the 22nd-25th May 2017.
