PALLAVI DEAN: 'DESIGNERS MUST BE PSYCHOLOGISTS AND HUSTLERS'
Award-winning architect and designer Pallavi Dean will host a masterclass on perfecting commercial design during Dubai Design Week.
The woman behind the Design District housed Pallavi Dean Interiors is set to share her secrets on how best to manipulate and beautify consumer space.
However, speaking to INDEX Design Series ahead of her workshop - which she will host with colleague Christina Morgan - Dean (right) admitted that it takes a lot more than just the perfect products to bring a commercial interior to life.
She said: "Christina and I will be hosting a talk on how to design commercial spaces, letting people understand all the people they need for a design space.
"As far as we’re concerned, you need to be a psychologist and a hustler – among other things – for it all to work.
"It should be a fun talk!"
The two-hour talk is set to draw upon the design of the Mirage Project Point - which Pallavi and Christina oversaw - with focus on its floor and wall coverings. The pair will also examine how to use porcelain tiles in ways different to the norm, such as in furniture and kitchen design, which they will demonstrate.
As well as the discussion, Dean will also be using the Dubai design scene's premier week to exhibit her latest range (bottom right), featuring the Bell chair, a semi-formal task chair designed to inspire moments of deep work, thought and creativity; the Svagata vertical console, an upright take on the traditional console table, with matching pouf; and the Samagree layered light clusters.
She explained: “Dubai Design Week is a wonderful platform for the region’s designers. It draws in all these big international brands who can then interact with designers out here. For them it is a great opportunity to interact and meet with industry people from all over the world.
“In the last five years or so I’ve found the Dubai design scene to have become a lot more mature. There is now so much good competition out there. There are many amazing boutique firms upping the game and keeping us all on our toes, driving all of our work forward. The growth of decent publications giving a spotlight to all this work really has improved things too."
Asked if any other shows or exhibitions had caught her eye, Dean said: “For me, I’m really excited about the Global Grad Show. That’s where the real talent is - the creative eye that hasn’t yet been discovered or jaded by the reality of commercial design.”
Design Talk with Pallavi Dean Interiors will take place on Wednesday 26 October, from 2pm until 4pm at the Mirage Office, Building 5, Office 101B Dubai Design District (d3)
