Jumeirah Mosque
A spectacular example of modern Islamic architecture!

Built of stone in medieval Fatimid tradition, the mosque with its twin minarets and majestic dome is a city landmark. It is particularly attractive at night when subtle lighting throws its artistry into relief. It is the only mosque in Dubai to allow non-Muslims to enter; however visitors should dress conservatively (no shorts) and women should bring a head scarf. Children under 5 are not usually admitted. Tours should be organised through The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding who conduct tours on Thursday and Sunday at 10:00. |
Grand Mosque

Situated on the Bur Dubai side of the Creek near the Ruler’s Court, Grand Mosque was re-built in 1998 styled to resemble the original Grand Mosque, and now has, at 70 metres, the city’s tallest minaret. It has 45 small domes in addition to nine large ones boasting stained glass panels, making it a distinguished landmark and important place of worship (non-Muslims are not allowed inside). |
Burj Nahar

Built around 1870 the Nahar tower was one in line of defences to the east and north of the city. One of three watchtowers guarding the old city, the restored Burj Nahar in its picturesque gardens in Deira is popular with photographers. |
Dubai Museum

Al Fahidi Fort, which houses the Dubai Museum, was built around 1787, and once guarded the landward approaches to the town as Dubai’s primary sea defence. Renovated for use as museum, its colourful life size dioramas vividly depict everyday life in the days before the discovery of oil. Galleries recreate scenes from the Creek, traditional Arab houses, mosques, the souq, date farms and desert and marine life. Also on display are artefacts from several excavations in the emirate, recovered from graves that date back to the third millennium B.C. |
Heritage Village & Diving Village

A tradition heritage village, located near the mouth of Dubai Creek in the Shindagha district, features potters and weavers practicing traditional crafts, as well as exhibits and demonstrations of pearl diving all of which give a glimpse into the Bedouin way of like. |
Al Ahmadiya School

Established in 1912, Al Ahmadiya School was the first regular school in Dubai, located in the Al-Ras Area of Deira. The two-storey building was renovated in 1995 for use as a museum of education. |
Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House

The official residence of Sheikhs Saeed Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai (1912-1958) and grandfather of the present Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has been restored to stand proud again on the Shindagha end of Dubai Creek. The house, which dates from 1896, today houses a rare Collection of historic photographs, coins, stamps and documents that record Dubai’s history. |
Bastakiya

The old district of Bastakiya with its narrow lanes and tall wind towers is being carefully renovated and turned into pedestrianised conservation area providing a hint of old Dubai. A short walk from Al Fahidi Fort, it is the largest concentration of traditional courtyard houses in Dubai. The Sheikh Mohamed Centre for Cultural Understanding organises walking tours around the area. |
